The Governments Christmas Think! campaign is in full swing with a series of new radio adverts and TV messages. A driver that has twice the legal limit is 30 times more likely to cause a road crash than a driver who's not had a drink. The campaign is focusing on the driver who has 1 to 3 drinks as apposed to a "drunk driver" and asks us to think about that second drink by alerting us to the personal consequences to a driver being found over the limit. Do you know what the limit is and do you know what the consequences are...?
The current legal limit in the UK is
80 milligrammes (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres (ml) of blood (80mg/100ml), or 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath, or 107mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine
Drink driver related offences are wider ranging than just being found over the limit in the event of a crash. Just being found sat in your car over the limit can result in a custodial sentence, substantial fine and lengthy driving ban, and that's even if you haven't put the keys in the ignition. You'll be processed by the police in the same way as any other criminal, your life will never be the same again.
Causing death by careless driving when under the influence - 14 years imprisonment, unlimited fine, 2 years minimum driving disqualification
Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink - 6 months imprisonment, fine up to £5000, minimum 12 months disqualification
Being in charge of a vehicle whilst above the legal limit or unfit through drink -3 months imprisonment, fine up to £2500 and discretionary driving disqualification
Refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis - 6 months imprisonment, fine up to £5000, minimum 12 months disqualification
