5 things to do if you've been involved in a car accident

what to do in the event of an accidentBeing involved in a traffic accident can be very stressful. Our 5 point guide explains what you must do to comply to the law and to assist in the claim process. Remember CarCare Direct Service, maintenance and mot plans include a free accident advice line to help with managing insurance companies, loan cars, repairs, excess claims and personal injury questions. But remember we have insurance to sort out fixing the metal, make sure the people involved are alright and deal with that requirement first, after all "it was an accident."

1. Stop: If you have an accident with another vehicle, a pedestrian, an animal (livestock), a dog or another person's property - You must STOP at once or go immediately to the nearest police station

2. Exchange details: Important information include - The names and addresses of all those involved, including those of any witnesses. Insurance Company details including policy numbers wherever possible. Registration numbers of the vehicles involved in the incident.

3. Show your motor insurance certificate: If someone is injured in the accident, you must show your motor insurance certificate to anyone who has a good reason for asking to see it. You must also report the matter to the Police within 24 hours of the incident and also show them your certificate of insurance, M.O.T. (if applicable), driving licence and vehicle registration document

4. Don't admit blame or offer any payments: Accidents are stressful, but it is essential that you do not admit blame or make any offer of payment. It would make it more difficult for your insurance company to manage your claim and may also affect your rights under the terms of your car policy.

5. Record ALL the facts: Record all the facts of the accident as soon as possible, regardless of how trivial the incident may seem at the time. The minor detail may help prove your case. Make a sketch of the scene showing where the vehicles involved both prior to and after the incident were. Include road signs and width, road markings, skid marks, obstructions, and where exactly the accident happened, it will all be useful. Make a note of the weather, road conditions and visibility. If you have a camera on your phone take photographs of the accident scene, the damage to the other vehicle and its occupants. Why not consider keeping a disposable camera in your glovebox?
